As an HIM Specialist, you will manage patient health information and medical records to ensure accuracy, compliance, and integrity for patient care.
You will retrieve, file, and organize physical and electronic patient records, process information requests, verify identities, assist providers with access, and perform quality checks on scanned documents. Additional responsibilities include updating demographics, handling correspondence, responding to inquiries in accordance with privacy regulations, and supporting customer service efforts for the Health Information Management department.
You will also perform birth registration functions, review encounters for completeness and missing signatures, respond to formal medical record requests from third parties, review pended dictations, and address medical record document messages from providers and staff.
Required
- High school diploma or GED
- 1 year of experience working with medical records
- 1 year of medical office experience
Preferred
- 1 year of experience working with medical records in an acute care Health Information Management environment
- Experience with Electronic Medical Records (EMR)
- Completion of a HIM equivalent study course
- Cerner experience
