HIMS Specialist

The HIMS Specialist is responsible for the comprehensive processing of continuation of care and patient-directed requests for medical information. This role includes customer service for walk-ins, opening and processing incoming mail, verifying authorizations, requesting historical medical records, and preparing correspondence in response to requests for medical information.

The position analyzes patient information to ensure compliance with Federal, State, Joint Commission, and CMS regulations. It also coordinates with clinicians to ensure documentation contains all required elements and is completed in a timely manner.

This is a hybrid position that is primarily remote. Candidates must reside within 100 miles of a Mayo Clinic campus to meet occasional on-site requirements based on business needs.

Requirements & Qualifications

Associate of Science degree in a healthcare-related discipline required; Associate of Science in Health Information Technology preferred.

HIT students actively completing the last semester of their associate degree program may be considered, with successful completion required within 6 months of hire for continued employment.

  • Knowledge of an electronic health record (EHR), Epic preferred
  • Basic understanding of medical terminology
  • Knowledge of medical records format and content
  • Prior ROI experience preferred
  • Customer service experience preferred
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, constantly changing, production environment with a focus on quality
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, and Outlook
  • Intermediate typing, keyboarding, and computer skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with minimal supervision
  • RHIT or RHIA preferred
