Medical Records Technician

  • Scan, index, and file non-electronic medical and administrative records/forms.
  • Maintain daily logs of documents scanned, filed, and indexed.
  • Respond to information requests in a positive and efficient manner.
  • Perform qualitative reviews of scanned documents completed by self and others.
  • Support accurate and complete patient records within the health information management workflow.
Requirements & Qualifications

You must meet federal qualification requirements for the GS-5 or GS-6 level.

  • U.S. citizenship is required.
  • Selective Service registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
  • May be subject to a probationary period.
  • Must successfully complete a federal background investigation.
  • Must meet financial suitability requirements.
  • Must comply with IHS immunization policy if working in an IHS healthcare facility.
  • Must be able to work schedules that may include weekends, holidays, and 24/7 coverage.

GS-5 qualifications:

  • 4 years of education above high school related to the position, or
  • 1 year of specialized experience at the GS-4 level performing medical records or health information management support duties, including reviewing records for completeness, scanning/indexing/fileing documentation, quality control checks, release of information, and tracking logs.

GS-6 qualifications:

  • 1 year of specialized experience at the GS-5 level performing medical record review, scanning, indexing, maintenance, release of information, quality assurance audits, and quantitative/qualitative analysis of medical records.

No education requirement is specified, but transcripts may be submitted if using education to qualify.
