Medical Records Technician

Duties

  • Scanning, indexing, and filing non-electronic medical and administrative information and forms
  • Maintaining daily logs of documents scanned, filed, and indexed
  • Responding to customer requests for information in a positive and efficient manner
  • Performing qualitative reviews of work performed by self and other scanned documents
Requirements & Qualifications
  • U.S. Citizenship is required
  • Selective Service registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959
  • Selectee may be subject to a probationary period
  • Must successfully pass a federal background investigation
  • Financial suitability review is required
  • Must comply with IHS immunization policy if working in an IHS healthcare facility
  • Work schedule may include 24/7 coverage, holidays, and weekends
  • Must set up direct deposit
  • Two valid forms of identification are required prior to appointment
  • REAL ID-compliant identification may be required

Qualifications

GS-5

  • 4 years of education above high school related to the position, or
  • 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-4 performing health information management support functions

GS-6

  • 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-5 performing medical records review, scanning, indexing, maintenance, release of information, quality assurance, and record analysis

Specialized Experience Examples

  • Reviewing medical records for completeness
  • Preparing, scanning, indexing, and filing medical documentation into EHR systems
  • Conducting quality control checks of scanned records
  • Processing release-of-information requests under HIPAA and Privacy requirements
  • Maintaining tracking logs and retrieving/archiving records
  • Communicating with healthcare providers and staff to ensure accurate patient records
