Medical Records Technician

Requirements & Qualifications

Duties

  • Scanning, indexing, and filing non-electronic medical and administrative information and forms
  • Maintaining daily logs of scanned, filed, and indexed documents
  • Responding to customer requests for information in a positive and efficient manner
  • Performing qualitative reviews of work performed by yourself and other scanned documents

Qualifications

GS-5

  • 4 years of education above high school with creditable education related to the position, or
  • 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-4 performing health information management support functions such as:
    • Reviewing medical records for completeness
    • Preparing, scanning, indexing, and filing medical documentation into electronic health record systems
    • Conducting quality control checks of scanned records
    • Processing requests for release of information in accordance with privacy requirements
    • Maintaining medical record tracking logs
    • Retrieving and archiving records
    • Communicating with healthcare providers and staff to ensure accurate and complete patient records

GS-6

  • 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-5 performing duties such as:
    • Reviewing, scanning, indexing, and maintaining patient medical records in an electronic health record system
    • Ensuring compliance with HIPAA and Privacy Act regulations
    • Processing medical record requests from patients, providers, attorneys, insurance companies, and government agencies
    • Conducting quality assurance audits of scanned medical records
    • Performing quantitative and qualitative analysis to identify missing documentation and obtain provider corrections

Additional Requirements

  • U.S. citizenship required
  • Selective Service registration required for males born after 12/31/1959
  • Successful completion of a federal background investigation required
  • Financial suitability review required
  • May be subject to a probationary period
  • Work schedule may include 24/7 coverage, holidays, and weekends
  • REAL ID-compliant identification required prior to appointment
