Medical Records Specialist

Reston Hospital Center

Responsible for supporting the Health Information Management (HIM) department by managing workflow queues, resolving unbilled accounts, and processing physician suspensions.

Key duties include:

  • Retrieving discharged medical records from various hospital departments and reconciling them for completeness
  • Retrieving, printing, storing, archiving, and retaining medical records and alternate media
  • Assisting with physician suspension workflows, including review, notice letters, and reminder calls
  • Preparing medical records and loose documents for scanning
  • Scanning and indexing medical record documents
  • Performing quality control validation to ensure scanned documents are properly associated with each record
  • Assisting with birth certificate processing as required by state law
  • Collecting and documenting birth information from parents and assisting with acknowledgment of paternity forms
  • Reviewing patient medical records and other resources to obtain required birth information
Requirements & Qualifications

High school diploma or GED preferred.

Preferred experience:

  • Hospital or medical office experience
  • Handling patient health information
  • Medical records document imaging
  • Medical records processing

Additional requirement:

  • Completion of a state certification program may be required for birth certificate processing; training and course fees will be provided.
