Medical Records Assistant (Non Nurse)

Requirements & Qualifications

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Prior medical records experience preferred

Specific requirements

  • Knowledge of state and federal legal requirements relating to documentation, confidentiality, and health information
  • Ability to communicate effectively with physicians, nursing staff, and allied health personnel
  • Efficient use of complex computer software systems
  • Functional knowledge in field of practice
  • Ability to make independent decisions when warranted
  • Knowledge of practices, procedures, laws, regulations, and guidelines governing functions in a post-acute care facility
  • Ability to implement and interpret department programs, goals, objectives, policies, and procedures
  • Competency in patient rights, safety, and sanitation
  • Maintain professional working relationships with associates, vendors, and others
  • Maintain confidentiality of proprietary and/or confidential information
  • Follow company policies, including harassment and compliance procedures
  • Adhere to Life Care’s Code of Conduct and complete mandatory compliance training

Essential functions

  • Accurately audit and complete ongoing reviews of patients’ clinical records to ensure documentation and performance compliance
  • Maintain current, overflow, and discharged record filing systems
  • Understand and apply LTC payment systems, including Medicare
  • Apply ICD-10-CM coding
  • Understand HIPAA requirements
  • Demonstrate dependable, regular attendance
  • Concentrate and use reasoning skills and good judgment
  • Communicate and function productively on an interdisciplinary team
  • Perform physical tasks including sitting, standing, bending, lifting, pushing, pulling, stooping, walking, reaching, and moving intermittently during working hours
  • Read, write, speak, and understand the English language
