Medical Records Technician (ROI)

US Veterans Health Administration

Health Information Management (HIM) position at the Edward Hines Jr. VA Medical Center focused on Release of Information (ROI) and medical records support.

The incumbent evaluates authorization requests, determines what protected health information may be released, and ensures compliance with applicable privacy laws and regulations. The role also includes logging and tracking requests, assisting patients and visitors, preparing correspondence, and reviewing paper and electronic health records to gather and disclose information appropriately.

Work schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM

Requirements & Qualifications

Basic requirements

  • Must be a United States citizen
  • Must be proficient in written and spoken English
  • One year of creditable experience with knowledge of medical terminology and health records, or qualifying education/combination of education and experience

Qualification areas

  • Knowledge of medical terminology, disease processes, human anatomy, and health information guidelines
  • Understanding of medical record and health information disclosure procedures
  • Ability to work with health information technology and office software
  • Ability to manage priorities and complete work within required timeframes
  • Knowledge of privacy laws and regulations including HIPAA, the Privacy Act, and the Freedom of Information Act
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, visitors, and staff

Grade level notes

  • GS-04: Entry level
  • GS-05: Requires demonstrated knowledge of health record documentation, disclosure processes, and privacy regulations
  • GS-06: Requires full performance-level experience in ROI and health information disclosure

Additional conditions of employment

  • Subject to background/security investigation
  • Must pass pre-employment physical examination
  • Seasonal influenza vaccination required unless exempt
  • Trial period required
  • Must complete all application requirements and submit required documents
