Official Description

Quantitative sensory testing (QST), testing and interpretation per extremity; using heat-pain stimuli to assess small nerve fiber sensation and hyperalgesia

Common Language Description

Quantitative sensory testing (QST) is a specialized diagnostic procedure that evaluates the sensory response of a patient's extremities, specifically focusing on small nerve fiber function. This testing employs heat-pain stimuli to assess sensations such as hyperalgesia, which is an increased sensitivity to painful stimuli. During the procedure, a device is utilized to deliver controlled sensory stimulation to one limb at a time, allowing healthcare professionals to measure the patient's sensory responses accurately. The results of this testing can provide valuable insights into the integrity and functionality of small nerve fibers, which are crucial for normal sensory perception. It is important to note that QST can be differentiated from other sensory tests based on the type of stimuli used; for instance, pressure stimulation is assessed using CPT® code 0106T, vibration sensation is evaluated with CPT® code 0107T, and cool temperature responses are tested with CPT® code 0108T. In cases where other types of sensory stimuli are employed that are not covered by the aforementioned codes, CPT® code 0110T should be used. This structured approach to sensory testing ensures that healthcare providers can accurately document and code for the specific type of sensory evaluation performed.
