Adaptive behavior treatment with protocol modification is a specialized therapeutic approach designed for patients exhibiting destructive behaviors. This treatment is characterized by the involvement of two or more technicians who work directly with the patient under the supervision of a physician or other qualified healthcare professional present on-site. The primary focus of this therapy is to address severely maladaptive behaviors, which may include physical violence towards oneself or others, defiance against authority, substance abuse, or inappropriate sexual behaviors for the patient's developmental stage. The therapy employs cognitive-behavioral techniques that gradually expose the patient to specific triggers that elicit these problematic behaviors. By doing so, the treatment aims to create a controlled and protective environment where the patient can learn to respond appropriately to these triggers. The technicians are responsible for implementing the treatment plan, making necessary protocol modifications, documenting the sessions, and collecting data that will be analyzed by the supervising healthcare professional. This professional then interprets the data and prepares a comprehensive report on the patient's progress. The CPT® Code 0373T is utilized to bill for each 15-minute increment of face-to-face time that the technicians spend with the patient during this therapeutic process.
