Computed tomography (CT) of the breast is a specialized imaging technique that utilizes advanced X-ray technology and computer processing to create detailed cross-sectional images of both breasts. This procedure is particularly useful for visualizing breast tissue and identifying potential abnormalities. During the CT scan, the patient is carefully positioned on an examination table, ensuring optimal alignment for accurate imaging. An initial scan is conducted to establish the starting position, after which the actual imaging process begins. As the table gradually moves through the CT scanner, multiple X-ray beams are emitted and detected, allowing for the measurement of radiation absorption in the breast tissue. The data collected during this process is then processed by a sophisticated computer program, which generates two-dimensional (2D) images displayed on a monitor. When indicated, three-dimensional (3D) rendering is performed, enhancing the visualization of the breast structures. This may involve various techniques such as shaded surface rendering, volumetric rendering, maximum intensity projections (MIPs), fusion imaging, and quantitative analysis, all aimed at providing a comprehensive view of the breast tissue. The procedure is performed without the use of contrast material, making it a non-invasive option for breast imaging. The physician is responsible for reviewing the resulting CT images, identifying any abnormalities, and documenting a written interpretation of the findings for further evaluation and management.
