Common Language Description

Magnetically controlled capsule endoscopy (MCE) is an innovative diagnostic procedure that serves as an alternative to traditional upper endoscopy, eliminating the need for anesthesia. This technique involves the use of a small video capsule that is initially positioned in the esophagus through the mouth, allowing for optimal imaging of the esophageal lining before it is released into the stomach. The capsule is tethered to a very thin cord, which facilitates its initial placement and subsequent maneuvering. Once in the stomach, the capsule is controlled magnetically using external guide magnets placed on the abdominal wall and left lower chest. This magnetic control allows for precise navigation of the capsule, enabling it to capture high-quality still images and video of the stomach lining. The captured images are transmitted to a control console, providing a comprehensive examination of the stomach. It is important to note that while the maneuverability of the capsule is generally satisfactory in the body, antrum, and pylorus regions of the stomach, it may be less effective in the fundus and cardia areas, particularly when the patient is in a supine position. However, some advanced systems allow for the procedure to be performed with the patient standing, which can enhance the assessment of these challenging regions.
