Virtual reality (VR) procedural dissociation is a therapeutic technique utilized to assist in the management of pain and anxiety for patients undergoing various medical, surgical, or radiological procedures. This innovative approach may serve as an alternative to traditional anesthesia for a range of interventions, including but not limited to burn treatments, interventional radiology, and procedures within orthopedic, gastroenterology, or dermatology specialties. The process involves the use of a head-mounted display that immerses the patient in a virtual environment, effectively occluding their immediate surroundings. This immersive experience is designed to distract patients from painful or anxiety-inducing stimuli by engaging them with three-dimensional visuals, music, and interactive elements. The goal of VR procedural dissociation is to create a sense of presence in a unique virtual setting, thereby alleviating discomfort and enhancing the overall procedural experience. This technique is applicable to both pediatric and adult populations, making it a versatile option in various clinical settings. When reporting VR dissociation services, it is important to use CPT® Code 0774T for each additional 15 minutes of intraservice time provided by a physician or qualified healthcare professional who is not the one performing the primary diagnostic or therapeutic service being supported.
