Noncontact near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is a sophisticated imaging technique utilized primarily for the screening of peripheral artery disease (PAD). This method leverages the unique properties of near-infrared light, which can penetrate biological tissues with relative ease. The technique is particularly effective in measuring key parameters such as deoxyhemoglobin, oxyhemoglobin, and the overall ratio of tissue oxygenation. The significance of this procedure lies in its ability to identify symptomatic PAD, a condition that poses a considerable risk of functional decline and mobility loss in affected individuals. During the assessment, patients typically undergo provocative maneuvers, which may include activities like a six-minute walking test or a standard treadmill test, to elicit physiological responses that can be measured. A noncontact handheld imaging device is strategically positioned over the gastrocnemius muscle in one or both lower extremities. This device emits six distinct near-infrared electromagnetic wavelengths of light, which interact differently with oxygenated and deoxygenated hemoglobin molecules present in the muscle tissue. The light that is not absorbed is reflected back to the device, where it is recorded for analysis. Advanced proprietary software processes the return signal, calculating the oxygen saturation levels at each pixel and generating a visual representation akin to a color-coded map. This map, along with a comprehensive clinical report, provides critical insights into the presence and severity of PAD. Notably, lower extremities affected by PAD exhibit specific changes in muscle oxygenation, and the extent of deviation from normal oxygenation levels can serve as a predictive indicator of potential walking limitations for the patient.
