Debridement of extensive eczematous or infected skin, as described by CPT® Code 11000, involves the surgical removal of foreign material, devitalized tissue, or contaminated tissue from areas of the skin affected by eczema or infection. This procedure is performed to expose the surrounding healthy tissue, which is essential for promoting healing and preventing further complications. The debridement is limited to up to 10% of the total body surface area, making it a targeted intervention for localized skin issues. Following the debridement process, it is common practice to apply antibiotics or topical lubricants to the affected skin to aid in recovery and protect the newly exposed tissue. For cases where more extensive debridement is necessary, CPT® Code 11001 can be utilized in conjunction with Code 11000 to account for each additional 10% of body surface area that is debrided, or for any additional percentage within that range. This structured approach ensures that the procedure is accurately documented and billed, reflecting the extent of treatment provided to the patient.
