Common Language Description

Debridement of nails, as described by CPT® Code 11721, involves the removal of diseased or damaged portions of fingernails or toenails using various methods. This procedure is typically indicated when there is a mycotic (fungal) infection affecting the nail, which can lead to discomfort, pain, and further complications if left untreated. During the debridement process, the affected nail is carefully trimmed at its tip to prepare for further treatment. The debridement is then performed aggressively, utilizing tools such as scalpels, files, or electric drills, which allow for precise removal of the infected nail bed or plate. The goal is to thin the nail as much as possible to alleviate symptoms and promote healing. After the debridement, the remaining nail surface is smoothed using files or abrasive pads to ensure a clean and manageable area. In some cases, a topical antifungal medication may be applied to the remaining nail to assist in combating the fungal infection. It is important to note that this code is specifically used when six or more nails are involved in the procedure, distinguishing it from CPT® Code 11720, which is applicable for one to five nails.
