Excision of pilonidal cyst or sinus; simple

Common Language Description

A pilonidal cyst is a type of cyst that typically forms in the area just above the cleft of the buttocks. It is often filled with hair, skin debris, and other materials. When a pilonidal cyst becomes infected, it can lead to the formation of draining sinuses, which are channels that allow the pus or fluid to escape. In cases of chronic infection where sinus formation occurs, various surgical interventions may be necessary to alleviate symptoms and prevent further complications. The procedure described by CPT® Code 11770 involves a simple excision of the pilonidal cyst or sinus. During this procedure, the surgeon assesses the extent of the pilonidal cavity, which may involve probing or the injection of methylene blue dye into the sinus to visualize its structure. The individual sinuses are then excised, and the surgical wounds are closed. Following this, a lateral incision is made to allow for curettage of the pilonidal cavity, which involves scraping out the contents of the cavity. After curettage, the incision is intentionally left open and packed with gauze to promote healing and prevent infection. This approach is designed to address the cyst effectively while minimizing the risk of recurrence.
