The procedure described by CPT® Code 15261 involves the harvesting of a full-thickness skin graft from a designated donor site, which may include areas such as the nose, ears, eyelids, and lips. A full-thickness graft is characterized by its inclusion of all layers of the skin, which encompasses the epidermis, dermis, and subcutaneous fat, along with associated blood vessels. This type of graft is essential for reconstructive purposes, particularly in areas where cosmetic and functional outcomes are critical. After the graft is harvested, the donor site is meticulously closed to promote healing and minimize scarring. The harvested graft is then positioned over a defect, which may be the result of trauma, surgical excision, or congenital anomalies. Following the placement of the graft, both the defect area and the graft itself are secured in place using sutures. It is important to note that CPT® Code 15261 is utilized to report each additional 20 square centimeters, or part thereof, of the full-thickness graft beyond the initial coverage provided by CPT® Code 15260, which is designated for grafts not exceeding 20 square centimeters. This coding structure allows for accurate billing and documentation of the extent of the surgical procedure performed.
