The CPT® Code 17003 pertains to the destruction of premalignant lesions, specifically the second through fourteenth lesions treated during a single session. Premalignant lesions, such as actinic keratoses (AK), are abnormal skin growths that can develop due to prolonged sun exposure. These lesions are typically characterized by rough, scaly patches that are confined to the epidermis, the outermost layer of the skin. The treatment process begins with a thorough examination of the lesions to determine the most suitable method of destruction. Various techniques may be employed, including laser surgery, electrosurgery, cryosurgery, chemosurgery, or surgical curettage. Local anesthesia may be administered to ensure patient comfort during the procedure. Among the most frequently used methods is cryosurgery, which involves the application of liquid nitrogen to freeze the lesion, effectively destroying it. Other common approaches include surgical curettage followed by electrosurgery and the use of chemical agents or laser resurfacing for multiple lesions. It is important to note that CPT® Code 17000 is used for the first lesion treated, while CPT® Code 17003 is designated for each additional lesion from the second to the fourteenth. For cases involving fifteen or more lesions, CPT® Code 17004 should be utilized.
