The CPT® Code 19282 refers to the procedure of placing breast localization device(s) for the purpose of accurately identifying the location of a lesion prior to a breast biopsy or lumpectomy. This procedure is essential in guiding the surgeon to the precise site of concern within the breast tissue. Localization devices can include various types such as clips, metallic pellets, wires or needles, and radioactive seeds. The process begins with the physician marking the area of concern on the skin and obtaining mammographic images of the breast to visualize the lesion. Following this, a needle is carefully advanced into the lesion, and additional mammographic images are taken to ensure the needle is correctly positioned within the mass. In cases where wire localization is utilized, a hooked wire is inserted into the lesion at a perpendicular angle, remaining anchored within the mass while the needle is withdrawn, leaving a short length of wire extending through the skin. Alternatively, a plastic stylet equipped with a localization device is inserted through the biopsy needle and guided to the lesion site using mammographic imaging. Once the localization device is in place, it is released, and both the stylet and needle are removed. It is important to note that CPT® Code 19282 is used for each additional lesion after the first, which is coded separately under CPT® Code 19281.
