The CPT® Code 21032 refers to the excision of a maxillary torus palatinus, which is a type of bony growth located in the midline of the hard palate. This growth is classified as a developmental anomaly, typically not presenting until adulthood. The maxillary torus palatinus, along with its counterpart, the torus mandibularis, which appears on the lingual surface of the mandible, are slow-growing and tumor-like in nature. These bony growths can vary significantly in size and shape, ranging from a single nodule to multiple nodules that may fuse together. Surgical intervention is generally indicated only when these growths interfere with the placement of dentures or when they become large enough to pose a risk of injury or ulceration. The procedure involves making an incision in the mucosa that covers the bony growth, allowing for exposure of the lesion. The excision can be performed by chiseling off the growth from the bone cortex or utilizing a bone bur for removal. It is important to differentiate this procedure from the excision of a torus mandibularis, which is coded under 21031.
