Common Language Description

The procedure described by CPT® Code 21044 involves the excision of a malignant tumor located in the mandible, which is the lower jawbone. This surgical intervention is critical for removing cancerous growths that can compromise the integrity of the mandible and surrounding tissues. The physician employs various surgical techniques to access the tumor, ensuring that the excision includes not only the tumor itself but also a margin of healthy tissue surrounding it. This is essential to ensure that all cancerous cells are removed, reducing the risk of recurrence. During the procedure, the surgeon may utilize specialized instruments such as saws, osteotomes, files, and drills to effectively remove the malignant mass. Depending on the size and location of the tumor, the procedure may necessitate the removal of adjacent teeth. Additionally, if the excision results in significant soft tissue loss, reconstruction may be performed using myocutaneous flaps, which involve the transfer of muscle and skin to repair the defect. In cases where bone harvesting is required for reconstruction or other purposes, this should be reported separately. The procedure concludes with the closure of all incisions using sutures to promote healing and restore the integrity of the mandible.
