The procedure described by CPT® Code 21501 involves the incision and drainage of a deep abscess or hematoma located in the soft tissues of the neck or thorax. This surgical intervention is typically performed by a physician when there is a collection of pus (abscess) or a localized collection of blood (hematoma) that requires drainage to alleviate pain, prevent infection, and promote healing. During the procedure, the physician makes a precise incision in the skin directly over the site of the abscess or hematoma. The incision is extended through the underlying soft tissue to access the cavity containing the abscess or hematoma. If the procedure is for an abscess, the physician will carefully break up any loculations, or compartments, within the abscess using blunt finger dissection to ensure complete drainage. In cases of hematoma, the physician will utilize suction to remove any clotted blood. Following the drainage, the cavity is typically irrigated with saline or an antibiotic solution to cleanse the area and reduce the risk of infection. Depending on the clinical situation, drains may be placed to facilitate ongoing drainage. The incision may be closed in layers or packed with gauze and left open to allow for further drainage and healing. This procedure is critical in managing infections and complications associated with deep abscesses and hematomas in the neck and thoracic regions.
