Common Language Description

Arthrodesis, commonly known as spinal fusion, is a surgical procedure aimed at permanently joining two or more vertebrae in the spine to eliminate motion between them. The CPT® Code 22610 specifically refers to the posterior or posterolateral technique for performing this fusion at a single interspace in the thoracic region of the spine. This procedure is typically indicated for patients experiencing instability due to fractures, degenerative disc disease, or other spinal conditions that compromise the structural integrity of the vertebrae. The surgical approach involves making an incision in the back, allowing access to the affected vertebral joints. During the procedure, the surgeon prepares the vertebrae for the placement of a bone graft, which may be harvested from the patient's own iliac crest or obtained from a donor source. The goal of the arthrodesis is to promote bone healing and stability, thereby alleviating pain and restoring function. The procedure may also involve the use of internal fixation devices to further stabilize the spine, ensuring that the vertebrae remain immobilized during the healing process.
