Common Language Description

Arthrodesis, commonly known as spinal fusion, is a surgical procedure aimed at permanently joining two or more vertebrae in the spine to eliminate motion between them. The CPT® Code 22612 specifically refers to the posterior or posterolateral technique for performing this fusion at a single interspace in the lumbar region of the spine. This procedure is typically indicated for patients suffering from conditions such as fractures, degenerative disc disease, or other forms of spinal instability that may lead to pain or neurological deficits. The posterior approach involves making an incision in the back, allowing access to the affected vertebral joints. During the procedure, the surgeon prepares the vertebrae for the placement of a bone graft, which can be harvested from the patient's own iliac crest or obtained from a donor source (allograft). The goal of the procedure is to stabilize the spine, promote healing, and restore function, often in conjunction with other surgical interventions as necessary. The use of internal fixation devices may also be employed to enhance stability during the healing process.
