Common Language Description

Arthrodesis, commonly known as spinal fusion, is a surgical procedure aimed at correcting spinal deformities, such as scoliosis or kyphosis, by fusing two or more vertebral segments. This procedure is particularly indicated for cases where there is a significant deformity that may affect the patient's quality of life or lead to further complications. The surgery involves making an incision either in the back of the neck or along the back over the affected spinal area, allowing access to the vertebrae. During the procedure, soft tissues are carefully dissected to expose the vertebrae, and the facet joints are removed to prepare the vertebral segments for fusion. The surfaces of the vertebrae are roughened to enhance the integration of the bone graft, which can be obtained from the patient's own body (autogenous bone graft) or from a donor (allograft). The bone graft is then placed between the vertebrae to promote healing and fusion. Additionally, internal fixation devices may be utilized to stabilize the spine during the healing process. This procedure can involve the fusion of 13 or more vertebral segments, making it a complex and significant intervention in the management of severe spinal deformities.
