Common Language Description

The procedure described by CPT® Code 23700 involves manipulation of the shoulder joint while the patient is under anesthesia. This manipulation is specifically aimed at addressing conditions such as frozen shoulder, which is medically known as adhesive capsulitis. Frozen shoulder is characterized by the thickening and tightening of the joint capsule surrounding the shoulder, leading to restricted movement and significant discomfort. During the procedure, the physician carefully moves the shoulder through a controlled range of motion to help separate any adhesions that have formed within the joint. This manipulation is performed after the patient has been adequately anesthetized to ensure comfort and minimize pain during the process. Following the manipulation, the physician may apply a fixation apparatus to stabilize the shoulder joint. Additionally, the procedure may include the injection of anti-inflammatory medication and a local anesthetic to further alleviate pain and inflammation. Post-procedure, the patient is typically advised to use a sling or strapping to support the shoulder, and they receive instructions on performing range of motion exercises. These exercises are crucial for maintaining mobility and preventing the recurrence of adhesions, and the patient is often encouraged to resume physical therapy as part of their recovery plan.
