Excision of the olecranon bursa, commonly known as olecranon bursectomy, is a surgical procedure aimed at removing the olecranon bursa, a fluid-filled sac located over the olecranon process of the proximal ulna. This procedure is typically indicated for patients suffering from severe chronic bursitis that has not improved with conservative treatments such as rest, ice, or anti-inflammatory medications. The olecranon bursa serves as a cushion between the skin and the underlying bone, and when it becomes inflamed or distended, it can cause significant discomfort and limit the range of motion in the elbow. The surgical approach involves making a midlateral incision at the elbow, allowing access to the bursa. The triceps tendon is then split longitudinally to facilitate the removal of the bursa. If the bursa is significantly enlarged, it may be windowed to release excess fluid prior to excision. The procedure concludes with the careful dissection of the bursa from the surrounding soft tissue and the closure of the surgical wound in layers to promote healing.
