A flexor or extensor tendon in the wrist or forearm is excised during the procedure identified by CPT® Code 25109. Flexor tendons are responsible for bending the wrist and decreasing the angle between parts of the limb, while extensor tendons serve to straighten the wrist and increase the angle between parts of the limb, effectively bringing them back into alignment. This surgical intervention involves a series of precise steps to ensure the tendon is properly excised. The physician begins by making an incision in the skin over the targeted tendon, carefully retracting the overlying tissue to gain access to the tendon. Once exposed, the tendon is meticulously dissected free from its surrounding attachments. After the tendon is fully freed, both ends are severed, allowing for its complete removal. Finally, the incision is closed using sutures, ensuring proper healing and recovery of the surrounding tissue.
