Bursae are small, fluid-filled sacs that are lined with a synovial membrane, serving to reduce friction between tissues in areas of the body that are subject to repetitive movement or pressure. These structures are commonly found in regions where tendons pass over bones, as well as in joints and other prominent body parts. The CPT® Code 26025 specifically refers to the procedure of draining a single palmar bursa, which is located in the palm of the hand. This procedure is typically indicated when the bursa becomes inflamed or infected, leading to discomfort and impaired function. During the drainage process, the surgeon will make an incision to access the bursa, allowing for the removal of the accumulated synovial fluid. In some cases, the bursal sac may be irrigated with an antibiotic solution or normal saline to help clear any infection before the incision is closed. It is important to note that this code is applicable only for the drainage of a single palmar bursa; if multiple bursae require intervention, CPT® Code 26030 should be utilized instead.
