Tendon sheath incision (eg, for trigger finger)

Common Language Description

The flexor tendons of the hand are essential structures that connect the muscles in the forearm to the fingers, allowing for movement and dexterity. These tendons travel through protective tunnels known as tendon sheaths, which are designed to keep the tendons close to the bones of the fingers. In certain conditions, such as trigger finger, these tendons can become irritated or inflamed, leading to the formation of nodules. When these nodules develop, they can obstruct the smooth gliding motion of the tendon within the sheath. As a result, the tendon may catch at the entrance of the sheath, causing a sudden release that straightens the finger, a phenomenon characteristic of trigger finger. To alleviate this condition, a surgical procedure known as tendon sheath incision is performed. This involves making a small incision in the palm of the hand directly over the affected finger, allowing the surgeon to cut the tendon sheath and relieve the pressure on the tendon, thereby restoring normal function and movement to the finger.
