Common Language Description

Fasciotomy is a surgical procedure that involves making incisions in the fascia, which is a layer of fibrous tissue that lies beneath the skin and envelops underlying tissues, including muscles. This procedure is specifically performed on the hip or thigh regions to alleviate conditions where tightness in the fascia is causing significant pain or restricting motion. The fascia plays a crucial role in supporting and separating muscle groups, and when it becomes excessively tight, it can lead to complications such as compartment syndrome. During a fasciotomy, a skin incision is made over the targeted area, allowing the surgeon to expose the fascia. Once exposed, a series of incisions are made in the fascia to relieve the pressure and restore normal function. A common site for this procedure is the fascia lata, which extends from the iliac spine to the greater trochanter. The surgical intervention aims to provide relief from symptoms and improve mobility in the affected area.
