The procedure described by CPT® Code 27125 refers to a hemiarthroplasty of the hip, commonly known as a partial hip replacement. This surgical intervention is indicated for patients with severe hip joint damage, often due to conditions such as osteoarthritis, avascular necrosis, or hip fractures. During the procedure, the physician removes the femoral head, which is the ball portion of the hip joint, and replaces it with a prosthetic implant. This can be a unipolar femoral head and stem prosthesis or a bipolar hemiprosthesis. The bipolar design includes a femoral head and stem along with an acetabular cup component that allows for greater mobility, as it can rotate independently within the acetabulum. The surgery involves making a lateral incision over the hip joint, followed by an incision of the hip capsule to access the femoral head. The acetabulum is then inspected, and any diseased cartilage is removed before the appropriate prosthetic device is selected and implanted. This procedure aims to relieve pain and restore function in patients suffering from hip joint disorders.
