Common Language Description

The greater trochanter is a prominent bony projection located on the femur, just below its neck, and serves as an important site for muscle attachment. A fracture in this area, known as a greater trochanteric fracture, can occur due to trauma or falls, particularly in older adults or individuals with weakened bone density. The closed treatment of this type of fracture, as indicated by CPT® Code 27246, involves managing the injury without the need for surgical manipulation of the bone fragments. This procedure typically includes obtaining separate radiographs to confirm the presence of the fracture, ensuring accurate diagnosis and treatment planning. Additionally, a thorough neurovascular examination is conducted to assess the integrity of the nerves and blood vessels surrounding the injury site, which is crucial for preventing complications. Following the assessment, the patient receives specific instructions regarding weight-bearing limitations to promote healing and may be provided with crutches or other walking aids to assist with mobility during the recovery process.
