Closed treatment of hip dislocation, traumatic; without anesthesia

Common Language Description

Closed treatment of hip dislocation, traumatic, without anesthesia, refers to a specific medical procedure aimed at addressing a dislocated hip joint that has occurred due to trauma, typically from high-energy incidents such as motor vehicle accidents. In this context, a hip dislocation is characterized by the displacement of the femoral head from its normal position within the acetabulum, which is the socket of the hip joint. The procedure is performed without the use of anesthesia, meaning that the patient remains fully conscious during the manual reduction process. The most common type of hip dislocation resulting from trauma is the posterior dislocation, although anterior dislocations can also occur. Prior to the closed treatment, the healthcare provider evaluates the neurovascular status of the affected leg to assess any potential damage to nerves or blood vessels. The closed treatment itself involves the application of manual techniques, utilizing traction and mechanical forces to guide the femoral head back into its proper alignment within the acetabulum. After the reduction is successfully achieved, the neurovascular status is re-evaluated to ensure that normal function has been restored. Confirmation of successful reduction is typically obtained through the use of radiographs, which are separate and reportable from the procedure itself. This code, 27250, is specifically designated for cases where the procedure is conducted without anesthesia, while a different code, 27252, is used when anesthesia is involved in the treatment process.
