Official Description

Excision, prepatellar bursa

Common Language Description

The procedure described by CPT® Code 27340 involves the excision of the prepatellar bursa, which is a small, fluid-filled sac situated in front of the patella, or kneecap. This bursa plays a crucial role in facilitating smooth movement of the patella beneath the skin as the knee undergoes flexion and extension. When the prepatellar bursa becomes inflamed or irritated, it can lead to conditions such as bursitis, causing pain and discomfort in the knee area. The surgical procedure entails making an incision in the skin directly over the knee joint, allowing access to the bursa. Once the bursa is excised, the incision is closed using sutures to promote proper healing. This procedure is typically performed to alleviate symptoms associated with bursal inflammation and to restore normal function of the knee joint.
