The CPT® Code 27372 refers to the procedure for the removal of a foreign body located in the deep tissues of the thigh region or knee area. This procedure is necessary when an object, which may be a result of trauma or an accident, becomes embedded in the soft tissues of the leg. The term "foreign body" encompasses a variety of materials, including metal, glass, wood, or other substances that can cause irritation, infection, or other complications if not removed. The procedure typically begins with the acquisition of radiographs, which are X-ray images that help in accurately locating the foreign object within the body. Following this, the skin over the area is thoroughly cleansed to minimize the risk of infection. An incision is then made directly over the site of the foreign body, allowing access to the underlying tissues. During the procedure, the surgeon may need to divide muscle, tendon, and/or ligaments that are overlying the foreign object to reach it effectively. Careful dissection of the surrounding tissue is performed until the foreign body is successfully removed. In some cases, the surgeon may also excise any granulomatous tissue that has formed around the foreign body, which is a response to the irritation caused by the object. This procedure is critical for alleviating pain, preventing infection, and restoring normal function to the affected area.
