Common Language Description

The CPT® Code 27385 refers to the surgical procedure for the suture of a ruptured quadriceps or hamstring muscle. This procedure is primarily indicated for tears and ruptures that typically occur in the quadriceps muscle, particularly affecting the distal head of the rectus femoris, or in the hamstring muscle, which is less common and usually occurs proximally near the ischium. The surgical intervention involves repairing the ruptured muscle or tendon to restore function and stability. In the case of a quadriceps rupture, the procedure entails making an anterior longitudinal incision over the quadriceps muscle, extending over the patella to expose the ruptured ends. For hamstring ruptures, a longitudinal incision is made over the defect site, with careful dissection to protect the sciatic nerve. The procedure is critical for patients experiencing significant muscle tears, as it aims to re-establish the integrity of the muscle structure and facilitate recovery of mobility and strength.
