Arthroplasty of the patella, also known as prosthetic resurfacing of the patella, is a surgical procedure aimed at addressing degenerative diseases affecting the patellofemoral joint. This condition often results in pain and functional limitations due to the deterioration of cartilage and other joint structures. The procedure involves making an incision over the anteromedial aspect of the knee to access the joint. Once the joint capsule is exposed and incised, the surgeon inspects the patellofemoral joint for any abnormalities, such as osteophytes, which are bony growths that can impede joint movement. The evaluation of patellar tracking is crucial, as it ensures that the patella moves correctly within the groove of the femur during knee motion. In cases where the cartilage is damaged, the surgeon may excise any overgrowth and smooth the articular surface of the patella to promote better joint function. The procedure culminates in the placement of a prosthetic component that is affixed to the patella, allowing for improved movement and reduced pain. The surgical wound is then meticulously closed in layers to promote optimal healing.
