The CPT® Code 27759 refers to the treatment of a tibial shaft fracture, which may occur alongside a fibular fracture. This procedure involves the use of an intramedullary implant, which is a device inserted into the medullary canal of the tibia to stabilize the fracture. The tibial shaft is the long, central part of the tibia, and fractures in this area can significantly impact mobility and function. The procedure may also include the use of interlocking screws and/or cerclage, which is a technique that involves wrapping a wire around the bone to provide additional support and stabilization. Prior to the procedure, radiological studies are conducted to confirm the presence and extent of the fracture. If the fracture fragments are displaced, they are manually manipulated back into their proper anatomical alignment, and further imaging is performed to ensure successful reduction. The use of an intramedullary implant is particularly beneficial as it allows for internal stabilization of the fracture, promoting healing while minimizing the need for extensive external fixation. This method is often preferred due to its ability to provide strong support while allowing for early mobilization of the patient.
