Common Language Description

Closed treatment of a medial malleolus fracture involves a non-surgical approach to address a fracture located at the medial malleolus, which is the bony prominence on the inner side of the ankle formed by the distal end of the tibia. This area is crucial as it plays a significant role in the ankle joint's function by articulating with the talus bone. The procedure is indicated when there is a fracture of the medial malleolus, particularly when the fracture is displaced, necessitating manipulation to restore proper alignment. During the treatment, separate radiographs are obtained to confirm the presence and extent of the fracture, ensuring accurate diagnosis and treatment planning. A thorough neurovascular examination is conducted to assess the integrity of the nerves and blood vessels surrounding the injury site, which is essential for preventing complications. In cases where the fracture is displaced, the fragments are manually manipulated back into their correct anatomical position, and immobilization is achieved through the application of a cast. Additionally, traction methods, either skeletal or skin, may be employed to maintain alignment during the healing process, further supporting the recovery of the fractured bone.
