The CPT® Code 27810 refers to the closed treatment of a bimalleolar ankle fracture, which involves the lateral and medial malleoli, the lateral and posterior malleoli, or the medial and posterior malleoli. A bimalleolar ankle fracture is characterized by the involvement of two malleoli, which are bony prominences located at the distal ends of the fibula and tibia. The lateral malleolus is the bony projection of the fibula that forms the outer aspect of the ankle, while the medial malleolus is the corresponding prominence of the tibia on the inner side of the ankle. Additionally, the posterior malleolus, also known as the posterior lip, is the bony process located at the back of the tibia. In this procedure, a nondisplaced bimalleolar ankle fracture is treated, meaning that the bone fragments have not moved out of their normal alignment. The treatment involves evaluating the fracture, which may include reviewing separately reportable X-rays to assess the condition of the fracture. If manipulation is required, the displaced fragments are carefully repositioned back into their proper anatomical alignment, which is also confirmed through imaging. Following manipulation, the fracture is typically immobilized using a splint or cast to ensure stability during the healing process.
