A hammertoe deformity is a condition characterized by a flexion deformity of the proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint, resulting in the toe curling downward. This deformity can lead to discomfort and difficulty in wearing shoes, as well as potential complications if left untreated. The correction of a hammertoe can be achieved through surgical procedures such as interphalangeal fusion or partial or total phalangectomy. Interphalangeal fusion involves the surgical joining of the bones in the PIP joint to eliminate the deformity and restore proper alignment. Alternatively, a phalangectomy may involve the removal of part or all of the affected phalanx to correct the deformity. The procedure typically requires a dorsal incision over the affected joint, allowing access to the underlying structures. The surgical approach aims to relieve pain, improve function, and enhance the overall appearance of the toe, thereby addressing both the physical and aesthetic concerns associated with hammertoe deformities.
