Osteotomy, shortening, angular or rotational correction; other phalanges, any toe

Common Language Description

A shortening osteotomy is a surgical procedure performed on one of the toes to correct an angular or rotational deformity. This procedure specifically targets the phalanges, which are the bones in the toes, and is applicable to any toe except the first. During the operation, the specific phalanx that requires shortening is carefully exposed to allow for precise surgical intervention. The surgeon identifies the sites where the bone cuts will be made, ensuring accurate alignment and correction of the deformity. Once the appropriate sites are marked, the bone is surgically cut, and a segment of the bone is excised to achieve the desired shortening. After the bone segment is removed, the remaining distal and proximal portions of the bone are brought into contact with each other. To ensure stability and proper healing of the reconfigured bone, internal fixation is applied. This procedure is distinct from similar procedures performed on the first toe, which is coded differently. For shortening osteotomy on the first toe, the appropriate code is 28310, while 28312 is specifically designated for the phalanges of the second, third, fourth, or fifth toe.
