Macrodactyly of the toe refers to a condition characterized by an abnormal enlargement of one or more toes due to an overgrowth of bone and soft tissue, which includes nerves, fat, and skin. This condition results in a digit that is significantly larger than normal, potentially leading to functional and aesthetic concerns. The surgical procedure coded as CPT® 28340 involves the reconstruction of the toe through soft tissue resection. The primary goal of this surgery is to reduce the size of the enlarged digit by removing excess soft tissue. This is typically achieved through a process known as debulking, which may involve excising thickened layers of skin. In some cases, the procedure may be performed in stages to achieve the desired outcome. During the surgery, skin grafts may be harvested from healthy tissue located in the proximal area of the digit or from the plantar instep to cover the defect created by the resection. These grafts are then carefully configured and secured in place with sutures to promote healing and restore the appearance of the toe.
