Closed treatment of a talus fracture involves a non-surgical approach to address a fracture of the talus bone, which is a critical component of the ankle joint. The talus connects with the tibia and fibula above at the ankle joint and with the calcaneus below at the subtalar joint. This procedure is specifically indicated for cases where the fracture is displaced, meaning that the bone fragments are not in their normal alignment. During the treatment, the physician performs a manual reduction, which is the process of manipulating the displaced fragments back into their correct anatomical position. This is a crucial step to ensure proper healing and function of the ankle joint. Following the manipulation, separate radiographs are obtained to verify that the fracture has been properly aligned. To stabilize the fracture and promote healing, a cast or brace is then applied. This method of treatment is distinct from the closed treatment of nondisplaced or minimally displaced fractures, which do not require manipulation and are treated with immobilization alone.
