A Risser jacket is a specialized type of body cast designed to provide support and immobilization for patients with specific spinal conditions. This cast extends from the patient's hip to the neck, and in some cases, it may also encompass a portion of the head. Although the use of Risser jackets has diminished in contemporary medical practice, they serve a critical function in stabilizing the spine and preventing further deformity in certain patients. The application process begins with the placement of a stockinette, which is a thin, stretchy fabric that covers the torso and neck, extending over the head if necessary. Following this, padding is applied to ensure comfort and protection of the skin. The casting material, either plaster or fiberglass, is then prepared by immersing it in water until saturated, after which excess moisture is removed. The saturated material is carefully wrapped around the torso, neck, and head, with the practitioner smoothing and molding it to achieve a secure fit. For coding purposes, the CPT® code 29010 is used when the Risser jacket is applied to the body only, while code 29015 is designated for jackets that extend to include the head.
