The CPT® Code 29823 refers to a surgical procedure known as arthroscopy of the shoulder, specifically involving extensive debridement of three or more discrete structures within the shoulder joint. Arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical technique that allows for the examination and treatment of joint conditions through small incisions. In this procedure, debridement is performed to remove unhealthy, dead, damaged, or infected tissue from the joint, which can help alleviate pain and restore function. The structures that may be involved in this extensive debridement include the humeral bone, humeral articular cartilage, glenoid bone, glenoid articular cartilage, biceps tendon, biceps anchor complex, labrum, articular capsule, and both the articular and bursal sides of the rotator cuff. Additionally, any foreign bodies present in the joint may also be removed during this procedure. The patient is typically positioned in either a lateral decubitus position with the arm suspended or in a beach chair position to facilitate access to the shoulder joint. This procedure is indicated when there is significant damage or disease affecting multiple structures within the shoulder, necessitating a thorough cleaning and repair to promote healing and improve joint function.
