The procedure described by CPT® Code 30020 involves the drainage of an abscess or hematoma located specifically in the nasal septum. An abscess is a localized collection of pus that can occur due to infection, while a hematoma refers to a collection of blood outside of blood vessels, often resulting from trauma. In this procedure, the healthcare provider approaches the affected area through an incision made inside the nose, which minimizes external scarring and allows for direct access to the nasal septum. The incision is carefully extended through the soft tissue to reach the abscess or hematoma. Once accessed, the provider opens the cavity to facilitate drainage. If the procedure is for an abscess, any loculated areas within the abscess are disrupted using blunt dissection techniques to ensure complete drainage. Conversely, if the procedure addresses a hematoma, the provider employs suction to remove any blood clots present within the cavity. Following the drainage, the cavity is typically irrigated with saline or an antibiotic solution to promote healing and reduce the risk of infection. It is important to note that if the abscess or hematoma is located in the internal nose but not on the nasal septum, a different code, CPT® Code 30000, should be used for billing purposes.
