Common Language Description

A direct laryngoscopy is a medical procedure that enables a physician to visualize the larynx and surrounding structures using a specialized instrument known as a direct laryngoscope. This procedure is performed to examine the oral cavity, oropharynx, hypopharynx, larynx, and trachea for any abnormalities or lesions. The direct laryngoscope can be either a rigid angled scope or a flexible scope, with the rigid scope being the most commonly utilized in surgical settings. During the procedure, the laryngoscope is inserted through the mouth, typically under general anesthesia, allowing for a clear view of the anatomical structures. If any lesions are identified during the examination, biopsy forceps are employed to obtain tissue samples for further analysis. Additionally, an operating microscope and/or telescope may be utilized to enhance visualization and evaluation of the mucosal surfaces and any lesions present. It is important to note that CPT® Code 31535 is designated for procedures performed without the aid of an operating microscope or telescope, while CPT® Code 31536 is used when these additional visualization tools are employed.
